The Celestial Guide to Garland
The Only Artificial Christmas
Garland Guide You Will Ever Need
By Mara Harris · Celestial At Home · Updated June 2026
Pre-lit, battery-operated, and plug-in Christmas garlands built for the homeowner who refuses to compromise. Thirty years of knowing what fails and engineering it out.
From the staircase banister to the front door frame, the mantel to the porch column -- garland is the detail that makes everything else look intentional. Getting it right means understanding three things before you buy a single strand: power type, foliage quality, and the arithmetic of length. This guide covers all three.
We have been making pre-lit artificial Christmas greenery since 1993 -- before "pre-lit" was even an industry category. Our founder Geoffrey Harris pioneered the concept. What that means for you: three decades of direct knowledge about what makes a garland look real year after year, and what makes it fade, droop, and disappoint by January.
Every garland in this collection uses UV treatment applied at the manufacturing stage, commercial-grade LED specifications, and multi-variety foliage blends. Not the shortcuts. The right materials.
The Celestial Difference
What Makes an Artificial
Garland Look Realistic?
The most realistic artificial garlands combine three things: PE real-touch tips moulded from real branches, UV treatment applied at the manufacturing stage, and LED wiring embedded inside the foliage. Most garlands on the market have none of the three.
Most garlands use PVC plastic tips -- stiff, shiny, and unmistakably artificial when light catches them at an angle. Real-touch garlands use PE (polyethylene) tips moulded directly from real tree branches. Same texture. Same flexibility. The way they drape and scatter light is different at the cellular level.
UV treatment must be applied at the manufacturing stage, not sprayed on afterward. Stage-applied treatment seals colour into the foliage permanently. That is the difference between a garland that looks fresh-cut in year twelve and one that has turned olive by year three.
And LEDs that are woven through the stem branches rather than wrapped on top? The light source disappears into the greenery the way it does in a real tree. No visible cord loops. No hot spots.
The First Decision
Should You Choose Battery-Operated or Plug-In?
Choose battery-operated if there is no outlet within reach of your placement; choose plug-in when an outlet is nearby and you want always-on light. Placement decides this, not preference. Decide it before anything else.
Battery-Operated
Run 6 to 8 weeks on D batteries. Built-in 6-hour auto-timer -- on at dusk, off overnight. Weatherproof battery housing. The Woodland Collection includes dual-colour LED technology: warm white or cool white on a single switch. Best for: front porch railings, outdoor columns, high banisters, staircase railings without nearby outlets.

Plug-In
Always on. Always the same brightness. UL-certified wiring rated for indoor and outdoor use. No battery management. The Plymouth plug-in is our most deluxe option -- the fullest, most layered foliage in the collection. Best for: mantels, indoor staircases, covered porches with exterior outlets.
for Your Home?
Four quick questions. No email, no tricks. Just the exact garland for your space, with placement and power guidance included.
Four Distinct Characters
Which Garland Collection Is Right for Your Home?
Each collection uses a specific foliage blend with its own personality. Every collection includes matching wreaths, urn fillers, teardrops, and stake trees -- so your home looks designed, not assembled piece by piece from different brands.
The definitive traditional garland. Douglas fir, fraser fir, and pine tips layered together with real pinecones and bright red berry clusters. Full, warm, built to never look dated. Dual-colour LEDs switch between golden warm white and bright cool white on a single dial -- two looks in one garland.
Cedar has a looser branch structure than fir -- the Aspen garland looks airier, with more visible depth between branches. It reads as mountain-house sophisticated rather than traditional. Classic warm white mini lights complement the open character of the foliage perfectly.
For the person who wants to close their eyes, touch the branch tips, and not be entirely sure they are artificial. Soft real-touch PE foliage accented with blue juniper berries and real pinecones. Warm white fairy lights create a diffuse atmospheric glow -- the quietest, most refined look in the collection.
Our most deluxe option. Cedar, pine, douglas fir, and fraser fir tips combined -- more foliage varieties than any other collection. The heaviest, fullest garland we make. When you want the most dramatic, professional-looking holiday display, this is where you start.
Sizing Guide
How Much Garland
Do You Need?
A mantel needs one 9-foot garland, a standard 13-step staircase needs two, and a porch column needs its height multiplied by 1.5. Measure first, then add roughly 30 percent for swagging and natural drape. The full chart below covers every placement.
Pro tip: measure your space first, then add about 30 percent more length for swagging on mantels, railings, and door frames. For the full measuring walkthrough, read our complete garland buying guide.
There is a specific kind of person who has been hanging the same garland for ten years. They know exactly where to hold it when it comes out of the box. They never think about buying a new one because they never need to.

How Long Should an Artificial Garland Last?
A well-made artificial garland should last 10 to 20 years or more. Our founder Geoffrey Harris has been building pre-lit artificial Christmas greenery since 1993, before pre-lit was an industry category, and every garland in this collection carries thirty years of understanding what fails and engineering it out.
Proper UV treatment applied at the manufacturing stage. Commercial LED specifications rated for thousands of hours. Multi-variety foliage blends that hold their depth and colour from the first season to the fifteenth. Weatherproof construction tested through Florida humidity and Minnesota winters.
Set it up once. Store it carefully. Get it out again next year looking exactly as good.
The Celestial System
How Do You Make Holiday Decor Look Professionally Designed?
Repetition. Decor reads as professionally designed when the same foliage blend, the same light temperature, and the same accent details repeat at every placement point. That is the entire trick, and it is why every Celestial At Home collection includes matching garlands, wreaths, urn fillers, teardrops, and stake trees.
Buy a Woodland garland and a Woodland wreath and they will look like they were designed together. Because they were. The douglas fir tips, the real pinecones, the warm white lights -- identical across every piece in the collection.
Start with the wreath on your front door. Add the garland across the porch railing or down the staircase banister. Flank the door with matching urn fillers. The effect is an entrance that reads as intentional -- not collected over years from five different brands.
Douglas fir, fraser fir, pine. Red berries + dual-colour LEDs. Classic American Christmas.
